You will see a list under "Prevent spotlight from indexing these locations". Option-Command-Space will set this scope to be the entire computer. Finally, see what login items are being fired up (System Preferences => Users and Groups => Login Items) and disable those.This bug only crops up on a small number of Macs, mdutil showed that indexing/searching is "disabled" for my hard disk.
